Regional Overview
The Southern region comprises 11 states – Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia – located in the southern United States. The region covers 758,040 square miles and is home to approximately 95.1 million, or about 32 per cent of the nation’s total. The Southern region’s higher education system includes 1189 universities and colleges, which enroll more than 4.2 million undergraduate students annually in the fall. Of these institutes, 536 are public and 653 are private; 669 are four year institutes, and 520 are two year colleges. Over 200 universities and colleges are located in Texas, while Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia are each home to more than 100 institutes. In addition, the Southern region has an extensive network of career and technical colleges, community colleges and special-purpose institutes.
